Where we came from

The current Ormiston Football Club is an amalgamation of two of the oldest football clubs in East Lothian, Pencaitland F.C. and Ormiston Primrose Junior F.C.

The football ground in the conservation village of Pencaitland was gifted to the villagers by a Court of Session Deed dated 16 April 1884 and has been in continual use since then as originally intended, "for the playing of football, cricket and other sports", although no one can remember cricket actually being played there. There have been a number of 'Pencaitland Football Clubs' during this period the most succesful being Pencaitland Amateur Football Club who were beaten finalists in two Scottish Amateur Cup Finals in the early sixties and eventually Scottish Amateur Cup winners in their centenary year 1984. As well as their success in the Scottish Amateur Cup Pencaitland won numerous local trophies and were by far the outstanding team for many years in the Edinburgh and Lothians area. In 1986 the then Committee decided that a fresh challenge was needed and so an application was made for membership of the East of Scotland Football Association and the East of Scotland Football League. Since joining the Senior ranks the Club has enjoyed mixed fortunes, spending an equal amount of time between the Premier and First Divisions, having been part of the original Premier Division for a few years when the League first split into two we have now been relegated three times and promoted twice as Champions on both occasions.

Ormiston Primrose were formed in the 1890's and were founder members of the original East of Scotland League. Like Pencaitland the Ormiston Club has enjoyed mixed fortunes over the years and indeed went out of business altogether during the sixties and seventies. Having been revived in 1980 Ormiston had a successful period culminating in their reaching the Final of the Scottish Junior Cup in 1989 where they went down to the only goal of the game to Ayrshire cracks Cumnock.

In 1999 an approach was made from Ormiston Primrose who played in the East Region of the Scottish Junior Football Association and who were in terminal decline with a proposal for a merger of the two Clubs to play in the East of Scotland League at the pitch in Ormiston. While the general surroundings at Pencaitland were far superior the pitch at Ormiston was in much better shape and the potential for development of the ground persuaded the Pencaitland Committee to go along with this proposal and so a new Club, Pencaitland & Ormiston F.C. was formed. The new Club won the First Division Championship in its’ second season but after some back room turmoil were unable to consolidate in the Premier and were relegated the following season. A further reappraisal has since been made and the decision taken to drop the Pencaitland connection from the name and carry on under the Ormiston Football Club banner although the backbone of the Club remains very much from Pencaitland.

It was felt at the time of the merger that with the help of East Lothian Council improvements at the football ground could be made sufficient to gain membership of the Scottish Football Association and thereby entry to the Scottish Qualifying Cup. The Local Authority, however, have been less than forthcoming with any help and in the meantime the SFA have moved the goal posts with regard to the facilities required for entry and our dream of being able to compete on a level playing field with the many Clubs in the East of Scotland who have this privilege seem further away than ever.
